The Couch to Summit Challenge moves to the Great Outdoors

Dear Reader,

It’s now only 3 weeks until our Couch to Summit 2017 Challenge and to say we are excited is a complete understatement.

The recent hot and summery weather, together with feedback from our participants and sponsors has led us to rethink our plans a little!

The good news is that we’ve decided to swap the concrete steps of the stadium for the green and pleasant rolling hills of our fabulous Malverns.  Yes,  that’s right,  not only do you get to climb to Everest (virtually) you also get the added bonus of the beautiful vistas, taking in the twelve counties and of course the freshest air that the great outdoors has to offer!

70 metres to 70,000 steps  The challenge remains the same, to climb 70,000 steps but we are relocating our base camp to the lowest slopes of British Camp at Malvern. The route Terry has chosen summits at 70 metres at the Herefordshire Beacon – known (appropriately) as British Camp. Last weekend Terry walked the route whilst being filmed to give you an idea of what you can expect.

You can watch Terry’s video below – check out the stunning scenery in the background!

The Malvern’s Mountain:  a little local history  In case you were wondering The Herefordshire Beacon IS a mountain (although not quite as grand as Everest).  It stands just 4.5 metres over the traditional 304m qualification – and it would have been beautiful as a natural, grassy pyramid, but its sinuous earthworks make it sublime.

The camp itself is part of a British Best View which also takes in the great division of the English Marches: tame but sweetly lovely on the English side; grand and rugged on the Welsh side.   So what more do we need for a great day!

Charity Challenge, Of course, charity fundraising remains at the very heart of the Biz-Fit challenge and as well as the MS Society a portion of the fundraising will be gifted to the Malvern Hills Trust who protect and manage the iconic Malvern Hills and Commons.

So, what’s changed?

  • BizFit base camp becomes British Camp on the Malvern Hills
  • The challenge is to climb the 70-metre elevation to the British Camp Fort
  • Total number of climbs per team of 10 is 124
  • Estimated duration of climb is 3 hours per person

Whatever the weather  We have put in our request for a cloudless bright and summery day with a cooling gentle breeze for the 23rd June.  Ideal conditions to undertake the challenge and take in the magnificent views at the same time.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes from the relocated Basecamp at British Camp, Malvern

Sarah, on behalf of the BizFit Team.
